IMI is continuing its involvement with the European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) project, having secured a contract to provide equipment for Sizewell C in the UK.
Sizewell C 1 and 2 will be the seventh and eighth EPR to be equipped with IMI equipment, following Taishan 1 and 2 in China, Olkiluoto 3 in Finland, and Flamanville 3 in France, with Hinkley Point C 1 and 2 currently under construction in the UK.
The EPR model is designed to offer a replicable design for efficient nuclear plants that use considerably less uranium than earlier reactor models. Flamanville 3, the most recent EPR to come online, is reducing radioactive waste by between 15% and 30% thanks to the complete fission of uranium, compared with previous generations of reactors.
Luc Todo, President of EMEA Strategic Projects Nuclear at IMI, said: “Nuclear reactors are amongst the harshest environments on earth, requiring precise, robust and reliable equipment, manufactured to the very highest standards. The consistent use of IMI equipment across the global complement of EPRs contributes to the replicability of the model, which is an important risk mitigation factor, leading to a very low risk of non-conformities, therefore avoiding cost overruns.
