First positioner with Ethernet APL available

SAMSON has launched the TROVIS 3797, the world’s first Ethernet APL-certified positioner. Following successful certification, the device is now ready for practical use. The device enables seamless digital communication between field devices, the control system, and asset management, based on the proven two-wire cable (Type A according to IEC 61158-2). With this successful certification, a crucial building block for digitising the process field level is now available.

Ethernet-APL (Advanced Physical Layer) was developed specifically for the process industry. The technology combines power supply and data transmission over a single two-wire cable – even in hazardous areas and over distances of up to 1000 meters. The TROVIS 3797 supports PROFINET, an established Ethernet protocol according to PA Profile 4, and also allows the parallel use of open communication channels such as OPC UA.

Thanks to the direct Ethernet-APL connection, the control system can access configuration, diagnostic, and process data in near real time. Devices are automatically detected and can be configured and calibrated remotely. Software updates can be installed remotely, and device replacement and documentation are significantly simplified. The TROVIS 3797 thus helps ease the burden on increasingly scarce skilled personnel.

Each positioner in the TROVIS 3797 series forms the basis for a digital twin. Digital nameplates clearly identify both the valve and the actuator. The non-contacting position measuring system operates wear-free; an adjustable, tight-closing function monitors the zero point, while pressure sensors monitor the supply air and the control pressure. The air flow can be adjusted via software, even from the control room.

The positioner is suitable for all SAMSON valves and any valve with a NAMUR attachment. Adapter solutions enable easy integration of linear and rotary valves from other manufacturers.
