Patheon Incorporated (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada) purchased the Ferentino, Italy, facility from Biomedica Foscama SpA in February 2002. Patheon is spending approximately USD 40 million on upgrading and expanding the idled facility this year with production operations expected in early 2003. The company will also spend another USD 40 million in 2003, including an additional lyophilisation unit. It is expected that Patheon will need to employ approximately 100 people at the Ferentino site once it is fully operational. Patheon is a contract manufacturer that offers clients aseptic filling, manufacturing of sterile solid dose and liquid dose, packaging, including vials, ampoules, bottles, and specialty needs, class 100 clean rooms, plus research and development capabilities. With approximately 2700 employees and over 100 pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients, Patheon is striving to become the preferred contract manufacturer for the industry.
