A contract worth about USD 600 million to begin rebuilding Iraq’s infrastructure will be awarded later this week or early next week, the head of the US Agency for International Development said on Tuesday. The contract, which includes repair of Iraq’s utilities, roads, bridges and public buildings, is part of USD 1.9 billion slated to be spent on initial reconstruction by USAID through eight contracts put out for bid earlier this year.
Companies previously reported to be vying for the infrastructure contract include Bechtel Group Inc., Fluor Corp., Parsons Corp. and Louis Berger Group Inc. Energy and construction company Halliburton Co. is not in contention to be a prime contractor but may be in the running as a subcontractor, a company official has said.
