Britain is gearing up to build a wave of huge offshore wind farms which will be crucial if the government is to meet its target of tripling renewable power production by 2010, an industry source has said. The source said the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) will give the go ahead early next week for the second round of bidding for licences to build the next generation of offshore wind farms. “This is the round that will produce the big gigawatt impact by 2010,” the source said. The government sees encouraging offshore wind as key to meeting its target of providing 10 percent of the Britain’s power from green sources by 2010, up from three percent at present.
