Flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) is a continuous process that removes sulphur dioxide from the flue gas before releasing it to the atmosphere. The performance and reliability of the valves and pumps used in the process can significantly affect the FGD unit’s operation. Selecting the wrong valve can result in significant repair costs, short maintenance intervals and poor serviceability.
A coal power plant in Denmark wanted to improve the performance of the existing valve process conditions in their FGD lime slurry control feeding system. At the time, they were using a special control valve with a ceramic trim system. The maintenance interval for this valve was 6 to 9 months. The power plant selected the Flowrox PVE pinch valve for the lime slurry control, as this was a critical process. A year later, they installed another Flowrox valve to a similar application.
After putting these valves into use, the power plant claims to have experienced more process benefits than they originally expected. The operation of the valves has been reliable and their wear resistance has been significantly better compared to before. The service interval of the valves increased to more than 24 months, without causing any disturbance to the lime slurry control.
Other benefits from the valve include excellent wear resistance, a long valve sleeve lifetime, low maintenance costs, reliable operation and an undisturbed process.
