ABS digester solutions in the Netherlands

ABS has provided a mix of reduced energy consumption to a wastewater treatment plant in the Netherlands that needed to increase the efficiency of its sludge fermentation tower and minimise maintenance costs. Besides purification of wastewater from the city of Groningen and the surrounding boroughs, the Garmerwolde wastewater treatment plant also has a sludge processing line for both its own purification process and those of other treatment plants in the area. The sludge fermentation tower at the Garmerwolde wastewater treatment plant was not optimal – the maximum admissible solid percentage was only between 3 to 4%. Therefore the local water board turned to ABS to find a solution to improve the process. ABS solution was to equip the five million litre digester with 2 pieces of SCABA agitators, specially developed for this purpose. Thanks to its design and a shaft length of 13m, the SCABA agitators are capable of mixing the whole contents of the tower, preventing a layer forming on top and sedimentation of solid material at the bottom. The Water Board was intensively supported by a specialised ABS team of technicians and a project manager during execution of the test and during the installation work.
