German chemicals company Celanese AG will build a 600,000 tonne-per-year acetic acid plant in Nanjing, eastern China. Executive vice president Reinhard Gradl told an industry conference in Singapore that China’s demand for acetic acid was expected to grow at 10% a year. “We decided this morning to open an acetic acid plant in Nanjing. We want to be where the growth is,” Gradl told delegates. Acetic acid, which is responsible for the characteristic odour and sour taste of vinegar, is a chemical building block in the manufacture of films, textiles, latex paints and glues. Celanese said project activities would begin immediately following approval by the Chinese government. Production at the plant, to be located at the Nanjing Chemical Industry Park, Nanjing City in Jiangsu province, was expected to begin in late 2005 to early 2006.
