AMPO POYAM VALVES has been awarded a contract to supply diverse 20” and 600 lbs highly engineered gate valves for BP WHITING refinery in Indiana, USA. These valves were designed hand in hand with BP in 2008 in order to provide a solution for their Ultraformer processes. The hydrogen in this service has the potential to combust when exposed to the atmosphere. Therefore, control of fugitive emissions is critical. The packing box has been specially designed to contain Hydrogen in the process lines without leakage to the atmosphere. Due to the valves’ excellent performance, BP has again relied on AMPO POYAM VALVES for the design and manufacturing of an additional order of these gate valves for their refinery in Indiana.
The Whiting refinery is BP’s largest refinery anywhere in the world and can produce enough gasoline each day to support the average daily travel of more than 7 million cars. Along with a range of liquid fuels, the refinery produces about 7% of all asphalt in the United States. Moreover, the refinery is currently constructing a new naphtha hydrotreating unit that will significantly reduce the amount of sulfur in its fuels and it will be fully operational in 2020. On the other hand, it is continuously working on the development of innovative technologies to protect the environment and boost efficiency, such as gas cloud imaging cameras to monitor facilities and identify new methane leaks earlier, and the implementation of drones to inspect flares and robots to clean sulfur tanks.
