Emerson has gained DNV-GL approval for its ASCO 551 and 553 series solenoid valves. This enables them to be used worldwide on ballast water treatment plants, following the introduction of a new mandatory standard in September 2017.
The DNV-GL approved solenoid valves from ASCO are available with aluminium or stainless steel bodies and with a variety of solenoid options, enabling them to be used in safe areas and Ex zones. The ASCO 551 and 553 series valves are also certified for use in functional safety loops, which can be found on LNG vessels and tankers. As the valves are suitable for a broad range of applications, it is easier to standardise on one solenoid valve, simplifying on-board maintenance.
DNV-GL approval combines two standards: DNV (Det Norske Veritas) and GL (Germanischer Lloyds). It is a global standard meaning there is no need to purchase different solenoid valves depending on where the treatment plant or ship is being constructed. The new regulation will have a worldwide effect on around 70,000 boats in total, with 2000 more being built each year.
