VA Tech Hydro has received an order for a pumped storage power unit at the hydro power plant Hintermuhr in the province of Salzburg, Austria. The EUR 19 million order was placed by Salzburg AG in Austria, a utility focussed on renewable energy. The scope of supply of the project includes model testing as well as the design, manufacturing, transportation, installation and commissioning of a hydro-electric package consisting of a reversible vertical Francis pump turbine with an output of 75MW and a head of 518m, inlet valve, downstream butterfly valve, motor-generator, switchyard including start up facilities and all secondary equipment related to this new generating set. The newly installed pumped storage unit will have practically no ecological impact as there is no visible change of the civil construction necessary and will be commissioned by December 2007.
