RWE Npower Renewables has obtained permission from the Scottish government to build a hydroelectric power plant near Kylestrome. With a generating capacity of 4.5MW, the plant will generate enough power to serve 2500 homes in the country and provide construction jobs and long lasting community benefits in the remote location.
Scotland has a target of achieving 80% of its power demand from renewables, including hydroelectric power, by 2020. The country derived 27% of its power from alternative energy sources in 2009.
