India’s state-owned refining and marketing firm Bharat Petroleum Corp. plans to expand the capacity of its Bombay refinery to 12 million metric tons a year from 6.90 million tons by October 2004. “The expansion will cost about INR 18 billion and will enable us to provide superior quality gasoline and diesel to match tougher emission norms that are expected to be enforced in 2005,” said a company official. New facilities including a hydrocracker unit, crude and vacuum distillation units, a hydrogen unit and a sulphur recovery block. The combined refining capacity of India’s 18 refineries is 114.67 million tons a year at present. India’s annual domestic demand for petroleum products is currently about 100 million tons.
