Emerson has been chosen by LyondellBasell, a multinational chemical company, to update control systems and software at its Wesseling complex in Germany. This adoption of advanced automation technology aims to improve the operation of an ethylene cracker and butadiene production plant. Emerson’s digital tools and project engineering services will facilitate a seamless transition during the planned plant shutdown in 2024.
The Wesseling site stands as LyondellBasell’s largest manufacturing facility in Europe. As part of a broader global modernization initiative, LyondellBasell is unifying its control system technology. Emerson was selected for the project based on its ability to execute all hardware and software upgrades within the two-week turnaround period.
Emerson’s DeltaV™ distributed control system and DeltaV Live software will be utilized to operate the ethylene cracker safely and efficiently. The company’s AMS Device Manager software will support the start-up process and ongoing management of field instrumentation. These advanced automation solutions will significantly decrease engineering time for implementing control strategies aimed at enhancing efficiency. DeltaV Live software will offer contemporary user interfaces, simplifying plant management, facilitating early issue detection, and maximizing worker productivity.
Virtual DeltaV systems will be employed throughout the project to aid in development, testing, and training. An operator training solution utilizing Emerson’s MIMIC™ process simulation software will assist operators in becoming familiar with the new control system before start-up, thereby reducing the risk of potential issues and optimizing operator efficiency. Emerson’s on-site engineers will offer start-up assistance and provide guidance on implementing modern control strategies.
