Persero, Thorcon to develop a national nuclear industry

PT PAL Indonesia (Persero) began to explore new industrial sectors, namely nuclear power. The company that has been known in the shipyard industry will work with Thorcon International Pte. Ltd. (Thorcon). Thorcon International Pte, Ltd. is a candidate for Independent Power Producer (IPP) who has expressed seriousness to the Government to make an investment of USD 1.2bn or around Rp. 17 Trillion to build a PLTT in Indonesia.

At present, a partnership has been agreed between the two parties by conducting a study of the development and construction of Thorcon’s design reactor until it can be fabricated by PT PAL. This collaboration between PT PAL Indonesia and Thorcon International can be the beginning of the establishment of the national nuclear industry in accordance with the mandate of PP 14 of 2015 concerning the National Industrial Master Plan.

The Thorium Molten Salt Reactor 500MW Power Plant, known as the 500 MW Thorium Power Plant (PLTT) has a modular design concept with a capacity of each 250 MWe reactor that can be operated multimode, either as baseload or load follow.

PLTT can produce cheaper electricity from coal so that it can become a reliable energy system towards a low-carbon economy and the achievement of the electricity selling price target under the National BPP so that electricity tariffs can be reduced.

The PLTT, using a 174 meter long and 66-meter wide structure design model, which is equivalent to the Panamax class tanker, is planned to be built by Daewoo Shipyard & Marine Engineering in South Korea, the world’s No. 2 shipyard.
