Positioned for intelligence

Tyco Valves & Controls has introduced a new analogue positioner which enables plant operators to make use of valve status information in process control algorithms. The SmartCal intelligent positioner is hazardous-area certified and utilises non-contacting means to feed back accurate information about the exact positional status of the valve, together with data on the input signal and actuator pressure. Such historical information builds a comprehensive picture of the valve’s performance and can form the basis of many algorithms such as those used in predictive maintenance programmes. As the unit is AMS aware, various data can be collected in order to ensure the optimum performance is achieved from the Control Valve Package. SmartCal positioners may be calibrated on site, either by a direct touchpad system, or via HART commands from a PC based diagnostic system, utilising the HART protocol. The Auto Calibration function includes zero/span and PID features together with independent speed control and position limits to optimise the positioner to the process. As valve position feedback is transmitted via non-contacting means, the SmartCal unit can be mounted remotely, at distances up to 50m from the valve. This is particularly valuable for those applications where high vibration or extremely corrosive conditions make location at the valve problematical.
