Sensor Products Inc. (East Hanover, New Jersey, USA) has produced a thin sensor film that, by changing colour, reveals stress distribution and magnitude between any two surfaces that come in contact. The intensity of the resultant colour is quantifiable and enables you to determine precisely what the PSI is at any point on the contacting surfaces. Film colour translates to pressure by comparison to a colour calibration table or by utilising an optional imaging system. This product is useful for assessing interfacial stresses that occur at gasketed and flanged interfaces, in any kind of bolted joint or clamp, in lamination presses, roller systems and heat sealers, during welding, in materials testing and from impact forces.
