Ten wave and tidal energy projects have been given the green light in the UK, building the world’s first such bidding round for installations off the coast of Scotland. The developers have signed lease agreements with the Crown Estate for building projects on Pentland Firth and Orkney waters that will have a total capacity of 1.2GW. Six sites have been allocated for wave energy projects that will generate 600MW and four for tidal schemes that will produce another 600MW. E.ON, Scottish and Southern Energy Renewables and Scottish Power Renewables will head the larger of the ten projects and others in partnership with marine energy firms, who will also develop two smaller schemes.
