China-based Gaoqiao Petrochemical, a subsidiary of Sinopec, is likely to start construction of a new site at Shanghai Chemical Industry Park in 2013 to fulfill its relocation plan.
The company was told by Shanghai’s government to move from its present Pudong urban site to the city outskirts over increasing environment concerns. However, the process has been delayed by issues such as investment and staff allocation.
The new site will include a 20m tn/yr refinery, a 1m tn/yr cracker and downstream plants. However, there’s no detailed timetable on the move as Sinopec is still in discussion with the government over each side’s responsibilities. The relocation is reportedly to cost USD 9 billion.
