Farmland Industries and SynFuel Technologies LLC have signed a letter of intent for SynFuel to develop a coal gasification plant adjacent to Farmland’s ammonia fertiliser manufacturing facility in Enid, Oklahoma. Farmland will purchase syngas (hydrogen), steam, nitrogen, and other utilities produced by the coal gasification plant for use in the existing fertiliser facilities at Enid. Farmland President and CEO Bob Honse said: “This coal gasification plant will allow us to use an environmentally clean, cost-efficient process to produce nitrogen fertiliser at our Enid facility. This is another step in our strategy to reduce our reliance on domestic natural gas.” Facilities to be built at the Enid site include the gasifier, an air separation plant, and coal storage and handling facilities. SynFuels has begun engineering and expects to begin construction in August 2002, with completion in June 2004.
