Talos Energy restarts Sunspear well after valve replacement in U.S. Gulf

Talos Energy has resumed production at its Sunspear field in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico after resolving an equipment issue, the Houston-based offshore operator reported.

The Sunspear well had been shut in July following a failure of a surface-controlled subsurface safety valve shortly after production began. The valve was successfully replaced in late September, according to Talos’ latest quarterly earnings report. Crude from the field will now flow to Talos-owned Prince facility in the Gulf.

Looking ahead, Talos said the first well at Monument, a subsea tieback operated by Beacon Offshore Energy, is expected to spud in early Q1 2026, with first production projected by late 2026. Talos holds a 29.7% stake in Monument, while Beacon operates at 41.7% and Navitas Petroleum holds the remaining 28.6%.

The company also plans to drill an appraisal well at its Daenerys field in Q2 2026, following a successful exploration well in August.

Talos reported third-quarter production of 95,200 barrels of oil equivalent per day, a 1.35% decline compared with the same period last year. Revenue totaled USD 450 million, down 11.6% year-over-year, and the company posted a net loss of USD 95.9 million, compared with a USD 88 million profit in Q3 2024. The loss included USD 60.2 million in non-cash ceiling test impairment charges.
