Tyco success at sugar refinery

Tyco Valves and Controls has supplied over 400 pneumatically actuated valves to a new process plant at the East London site of Tate & Lyle Europe. The package has included butterfly, ball & plug valves with pneumatic actuators, almost all of which are fitted with valves with Avid ZR Plus Position Monitors. The ZR Plus offers a simple and cost-effective solution for operational control and monitoring of pneumatic actuators. Designed specifically for General Purpose or IS (Intrinsically Safe) applications, it integrates the pre-wired solenoid valve coil and position sensors into a single, high impact, IP67 resin enclosure unit.
Installation costs were significantly reduced since this equipment requires just one steel wired armoured cable (SWA) instead of the more conventional two, cutting by half both the time required and the cost of installing cabling. Throughout the life of the plant, this will continue to provide benefits since future cable maintenance costs will be similarly reduced. In addition, having switchbox and solenoid in a single easy to maintain unit means that all maintenance can be undertaken at a single point.
Commissioning costs are also reduced dramatically by the provision of a manual override facility on the ZR Plus Position Monitors. This allows one man to check the operation of each actuator without constant referral to colleagues located at solenoid valve cabinets as in previous installations.
Valve equipment for the new plant includes Keystone Figure 320 and Figure 990 butterfly valves and a range of Tyco stainless steel double block and bleed ball valves, incorporating a built-in bleed valve to detect any leakage, to enable water and syrup to be segregated at all stages.
