Abu Dhabi plans to build new petrochemicals plants near an existing oil refinery at the Ruwais industrial area rather than at a port closer to the UAE capital. The Abu Dhabi National Chemicals Co. (ADNC) will shift all planned sites to Ruwais about 100mi southwest of the city, gaining more direct access to the refinery by products that will feed its crackers. The petrochemical developer, known as Chemaweyaat after the Arabic word for chemicals had initially planned to build some plants at the projected Port Khalifa, a new industrial zone between Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Chemaweyaat has since received a grant of land adjacent to the Ruwais refinery. The company aims to begin production at its first plant, an aromatics facility called Tacaamol, in 2015. Tacaamol will use liquid petroleum gas and naphtha to run the plants.
