The UK has announced that a new carbon capture and storage (CCS) pilot will be constructed which will aim to capture up 95% of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions when it is commissioned in 2015. The pilot, which is being funded by the government-backed Energy Technologies Institute (ETI), will be built on an as yet unnamed site by engineering group, Costain Group.
The goal of the plant is to accelerate the development and cut the costs of rolling out commercial scale demonstration CCS projects by the end of the decade. The ETI-Costain pilot will cost EUR 26.6 million. The project is aimed at pre-combustion carbon capture applications, involving CO2 removal by physical separation.
