A new fire-safe design of the butterfly valve DANAÏS 150 has successfully passed the fire safety test according to API 607 (American Petroleum Institute). The tests of this product line were performed at the research centre in Gradignan, France, on a KSB test stand which was specially built for this purpose. Being the certifying and testing body, Lloyd’s Register witnessed this test and issued the certificate, No. NTS 0300161. The new valves are employed in installations where there is a high risk of fire such as those of the chemical, petrochemical or sugar (alcohol production) industries. A PTFE ring backed up with a metal ring serves as a seal at the seat / disc interface of this double-offset butterfly valve series. If the plastomer seat ring is destroyed by fire, the metal ring assumes the function of an emergency seal. During the test, the valves were heated up to a temperature of approximately 600°C. Then they were cooled down, actuated once and after that, checked for leakage. The test is performed to demonstrate that, in the event of fire, fluid leakage from the closed valve installed in a system handling flammable media is limited to very small quantities or eliminated completely. All valves sized DN 50 (2″) to DN 600 (24″) for PN 10, 16, 25 and class 150 have qualified in these tests. They are available as from the middle of this year.
