WHAT TOPICS ARE COVERED?
Introduction to the Industry: A brief overview of the valve industry, end-user applications, standards, basic piping information, pressure ratings and classes, as well as application issues critical to effective valve application and usage.
Multi-turn Valves: The different types of gate and globe valves, along with stems, bonnets and other components.
Check Valves: The unique qualities of check valves, how they work and why correct sizing is critical.
Pressure-relief Valves: How these important valves do their job and why they play a critical role in plant safety, as well as important maintenance issues.
Quarter-turn Valves: Plug, ball and butterfly valves, the variations on these valve types and animations that demonstrate just how these valves control flow.
Actuators: Pneumatic, hydraulic and electric actuators, and the various actions used by actuators, including linear and rotary. Plus, what affects actuator selection.
Control Valves: The different types and what they do, typical control valve components, and sizing and control valve diagnostics.

WHO ARE THE PRESENTERS?
GREG JOHNSON is President, United Valve, located in Houston, TX. He is Chairman of the Education & Training Committee and serves on VMA’s Communications Committee. Johnson is also a frequent contributor to VALVE Magazine, writing on a wide variety of topics, including maintenance and repair, quality issues and standards. He is recipient of VMA’s Man of the Year award – the association’s highest designation – for his extensive volunteer work on behalf of the association and the valve industry. In addition, United Valve is a member of the Valve Repair Council and Johnson serves on its board of directors. He also has been an active member of the API Piping Subcommittee for more than 20 years and is a participant in ISO valve standards activities. Johnson is president of the Manufacturers Standardization Society, and also serves as chairman of Committee 310, “Valve Modification.”
ARIE BREGMAN, VP and General Manager for DFT Inc., Exton, PA, has been active in the valve industry for 34 years having worked for DFT, Nibco, Neles, Jamesbury and Metso in a wide variety of positions including Chief Engineer, Plant Manager, Marketing Manager and Manager of North American Service Centers. Bregman is active on the VMA Technical Committee as well as the Education and Training Committee, and he is the recipient of a VMA Service Award. He holds a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, MA. LEON BROOKS is Director of International Sales – Latin America, Distributed Valves, Cameron Valves & Measurement, Houston. He has been involved in oil and gas valve manufacturing industry for nearly 40 years having worked for Demco, Balon and Cameron. Brooks previously served on the Valve Manufacturers Association’s Communications Committee, is currently serving as Vice Chairman for the VMA Education & Training Committee and is a recipient of a 2010 VMA Service Award. Brooks has a BA in marketing from the University of Houston.
BERT EVANS is Manager, Fisher Valve and Instrument Training Manager, Emerson Educational Services, Emerson Process Management, Marshalltown, IA. He has a BS in Metallurgical Engineering from The Ohio State University and an MS in Materials Science from University of Arizona. Evans joined Emerson in 1999 as a Senior Application Engineer. He has managed sales engineering teams supporting a variety of Fisher’s Process Industries customers. Bert began working with Emerson Educational Services in 2007, where he oversees more than 200 customer and internal training sessions each year and also teaches Control Valve Engineering, Process Controls and Loop Tuning topics. He is a member of the VMA Education & Training Committee.
ED HOLTGRAVER has spent the last 45 years working with quarter-turn valves and actuators. He founded QTRCO, Inc., located in Tomball, TX, and serves as CEO. Prior to starting QTRCO he was employed at Fisher Controls, Keystone Valve and Henry Pratt in a variety of capacities including design engineer, engineering manager, manufacturing and materials manager, director of engineer, general manager and president. Holtgraver holds numerous valve patents and served as author of Keystone’s Control Valve Manual. He is a frequent contributor to industry publications and a member of the VMA Board of Directors; the Valve Magazine Editorial Review Board; and VMA’s Education & Training Committee. He received a 2010 VMA Service Award for his work on VMA’s valve education program. Holtgraver has a BSEE from Carnegie Mellon University and an MBA from Duquesne University. PAUL SOUZA is Training Manager for AUMA Actuators, Inc. in Canonsburg, PA, where has been employed in various positions since 1980. His general experience started in the manufacturing facility. Souza then became a field technician where he traveled extensively for plant startups, troubleshooting, training and sales support. He is a member of the VMA Education & Training Committee.
