The South African Valve and Actuator Manufacturers Association’s (Savama’s) long-awaited short skills course ‘Working with Valves’ was finally approved by the Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Education and Training Authority (Merseta) earlier this year. Consequently, Savama has already held an awards evening at GC Baars, in Germiston, where ten of its pilot group of learners received certificates for having successfully completed the course. Successful completion of the course means that learners have been found competent of the knowledge and skills necessary to work effectively in the industry and will be able to apply themselves to an industrial valves market, whether they are engineers or sales consultants. The course consists of ten modules, which include a variety of concepts and fields, such as the uses of specific valves and their applications and it also introduces and examines valve actuation and control, with the final modules covering installation and maintenance procedures. Owing to the wide use of industrial valves, Baars believes that the course will significantly benefit most local companies which handle or use valves, as learners will have a thorough understanding of the product.
