Weir gets valve upgrade contract for 28EDF reactors

Weir Power & Industrial France, a subsidiary of the global engineering company Weir Group plc, has secured a major, multi-million Euro contract to replace pneumatic controls for Main Steam Isolation Valves across 28 EDF reactors. The scope of the contract covers design, prototyping and testing, supply of 84 new items, on-site installation, supervision and commissioning of the new equipment.

The modification programme managed by a Marseille-based subsidiary of EDF, EDF CIPN will ensure future safety and integrity of flow control equipment throughout the enhanced operational lifetime of the EDF’s reactors. Weir’s solution incorporates a forged block design for the panels and full integration with MSIVs on site. Weir’s flow control experience in nuclear includes the manufacture of isolation, safety and control valves, supporting a global installed base, as well as track record for outage and refurbishment works in power stations.

Weir will work in collaboration with EDF and alongside nuclear partner SPIE Nucléaire. Assembly and testing will be completed within Weir’s St Victoret facility, while the project will require managing the modernisation programme across seven simultaneous sites with an estimated 18000 man hours to be delivered by a fully qualified team.
