The Brazilian electric power crisis is creating several business opportunities. Over the next five years the government predicts investments of at least USD 30 billion in the sector. The plan includes the construction of 49 thermal and 15 hydro-electric power facilities and transmission lines. The electric and electrical equipment as generators and solar heaters will boom. Abdib foresaw USD 9 billiion of investment in distribution, transmission and generation equipment in 2001, a growth of 15% if compared with 2000. Voith Siemens Hydro Power, a joint venture between Siemens and Voith, already has a huge business portfolio including the supply of turbines and generators for Itaipu, which will expand capacity from 1400mw to 14,000mw. The Brazilian producer of valves and instruments for thermal power facilities Valcont won a USD 5 million contract to supply components for three units being constructed by Rolls Royce. The company will execute a new contract worth with Siemens which will represents an additional income of between USD 800 million and 1.5 billion.
