Black & Veatch International (BVI) has been selected by the Rainbow Millennium Power Company (RMPC) to perform a detailed feasibility study for the first “greenfield” power station in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, which could result in a reduction of environmental pollution and strengthen economic development efforts. The proposed 240mw coal-fired plant would use discard coal as fuel, a known contributor to airborne and waterborne environmental hazards. These hazards would be reduced substantially through a circulating fluidised bed boiler (CFB), which is a more efficient combustion technology designed to burn the
High-sulphur waste coal resources. The plant would also be in a position to sell surplus emission reduction units (each ERU is equal to 1 ton of CO2) in accordance with the Kyoto Protocol of 1998.
